2/27/2022 Will Not Do Right? ~Rev. Bernie Chung

Where have our children learned to say, “That's not fair!” In reality, they have learned a lot from adults, especially from their parents as they develop their thinking and character.

Imperceptibly, children imitate adult habits and behaviors. So when children say “That's not fair!”, they probably are copying our response to a particular situation. When they hear “that’s not fair!” from someone else, they may put us in awe by replying “That’s life!”—like grownups.

Life indeed doesn’t seem fair sometimes. Unfortunate things happen to good people, and bad people seem to live good lives. People worthy of praise are often forgotten and ignored, while those without merit get recognition. These types of life contradictions have prompted King Solomon to lament with emotion: “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless!” The things we’ve pursued successfully early in life may yield some degree of satisfaction at first. But after a lifetime seeking things of temporal value, the enjoyment and excitement of yearning have disappeared altogether. Youth, love, career, fame and fortune, etc. are all unreliable, short lived, and fleeting entities. At the end, these pursuits cannot fulfill people's hearts. Life is full of unpredictable variables. “Void begets of void” often is the reality of life.

Genesis 18:25 says, “Far be it from you (God) to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” The most important thing in life is to truly know God, The Holy One, and to fear Him. Brothers and sisters, let’s continue to trust God and submit to him, and to do what he has considered the right things. Seek God’s wisdom and reconcile our relationship with him. May we enjoy his presence that is full of peace and joy each day. Amen!
