Season of good deeds
I just noticed that I helped out a few people this week. A
few nights ago, I assisted a woman at a street corner that looked a
little desperate. She was holding a cake and it appeared as if she
missed the bus. After flagging me down and explaining her
situation, I found that this was her circumstances. I decided to
give her a lift to her Jewish temple, as she had just missed the last
bus that would get her there on time. Was this a dangerous
situation, giving a stranger a ride? Perhaps. Is this something I
would suggest you do? It depends on the situation, but is not
necessarily something you MUST do.
Or consider today. Some packages happened to arrive at
the Fellowship Center, even though we did not order them. The
FedEx driver accidentally left at our doorstep some boxes that
were actually for a house down on Balboa with the same house
number. Guy and I decided to drop off the items after finding out
that if FedEx were to pick them up, the holiday schedule wouldn’t
allow a pickup by FedEx until the 28th... a whole 5 days later!!!
Ridiculous! We can carry the boxes over.
I know some would say that this is the season to do nice
things and that is why we acted in such a manner. But then that
begs one to ask, is there a time when we shouldn’t do nice things?
(Although I’ve heard that during this season, mall parking lots are
not the nicest of places. This is perhaps due to the stress of the
“season of giving.”) In either case, I want to suggest that good
things be done not just during the holiday season, but at all times
of the year. The added benefit to do good things around Christmas
is not because it is the season to do nice things, but to find the
opportunity to share about Jesus. All of these people I had never
met before. They were, in fact, strangers or “outsiders.” It is not
too late to do a good deed. And even though Christmas has passed,
Jesus is still the reason for the season.
Colossians 4:5
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
